We live close and thought we would try it out. Now it's our favorite thing to do Saturday mornings! Excellent service, good coffee, great food. We usually have a hard time finding a parking spot but other than that, we've always had a good experience!

Not a good choice ... It's Weird.. (Went 5/3 about 12:20pm). I use to own a restaurant. I walk in and this thin lanky black 20 year old has his mouth full of something and trying to swallow it before coming up to seat us. He walks over and he still trying to swallow whatever he has in his mouth. (Oh yea we keeping this real). He takes us to 1 booth and waitress says she doesn't want another table so he takes us to another booth next to a big table with kids. Which was okay but it makes me question his judgement. Food was okay Waitress was very nice girl . But nothing write home about . I just expected more

Delicious fresh squeezed OJ and thick crispy bacon. Large portion sizes. Would have liked to try the apple pancakes but didn't have an extra 25 mins to wait.

This place is always hopping when we get there, it's so popular. Since we discovered The Original Pancake House some weeks ago, it's become a regular Sunday-morning routine when we're in South Bend. Hungover from that Saturday night out? Up bright and early and looking for some breakfasty atmosphere with deliciousness served fresh on a plate? Yes, indeed, this is the place to be. I'd never really been a breakfast person before-- and since the only breakfast places I was familiar with were Bob Evans or IHOP, I thought it might be a laugh to go to a place that called itself the Original. Even if they don't mean "first", they certainly can boast of a certain originality. Bacon Pancakes (Youtube Adventure Time Bacon Pancakes and thank me later), German Pancakes (absolute monsters!!) and all kinds of egg concoctions, you won't be disappointed with their diverse menu. The bacon is thick cut and generous, as is their ham. Two words: Belgian Waffles. The most beautiful thing you'll see, dolloped with in-house whipped cream and a variety of fruit or nut toppings. Stephen usually chooses a scramble of some kind with hot sauce. The portions are more than enough to fill you up-- I have yet to clean my plate since many of the options come with 4 pieces of buttered toast AND breakfast hash on the side. We've never had to wait long to be seated, the food is served quickly and the wait staff is always friendly-- my coffee cup never goes dry! Lucy is a riot-- lucky you if you get seated at her table. We look forward to our visit to the ORIGINAL Pancake House every time!

Very family friendly atmosphere, though it can get a little noisy. The pancakes are great, and while I haven't tried their signature apple pancake yet, it looks amazing and smells great ( from the neighboring table). What I can say is that there are special items you can order that aren't on the menu. The eggs Benedict here are fantastic, some of the best I've ever had. You will not be disappointed if you order them (with a short stack of pancakes on the side).

The buttermilk pancakes were horrible and their syrup was water but my husband really liked the omelet he had. Won't go back when there is a Notre Dame home game though, way too busy and loud.

    1. no avocado 2. no ranch 3. crappy omelets 4. single slice of american cheese is a grilled cheese? i felt like this restaurant was on food stamps. the ambiance looked like a trailer exploded on a tub of country crock. If you think this place is anything special, i would be so sad to see the inside of your house.

We were traveling to Canada and stopped at this breakfast joint based off other Yelp reviews. The restaurant itself is very kid friendly and has the classic diner feel. The service was attentive, and the cost is manageable. The food itself is solid, if unspectacular. The spinach and cheese omelet was the best meal on the tale. The spinach is obviously fresh and this omelet had more cheese in it than any omelet I have ever seen...and tht is a good thing. When you breaks to the omelet cheese literally oozes all over the place! The pancakes were good but nothing special. The toast and hash were also standard diner food. All in all a solid experience, but not worth going out of your way for.

This place (formerly Bibblers) is awesome... at least for breakfast. This is my breakfast spot of choice. Good prices, great food! The service is quick, and they are good about trying to make the wait a little as possible (I've walked in and sat at a table several times, just not around game days). If I could live off the baked apple pancake for the rest of my life, I would. Gladly. It is worth the 25 minutes and is big enough for two (I like to share). The only downside I can think of is that the water glasses are baby sized, so they have to refill often, but again, the waitresses/waiters are good about it. :o) Side note: I'm sure the "normal" food is good, but why eat it when the breakfast food is amazing! The french toast is also super yummy., as well as the biscuits, gravy, and sausage.

We love eating breakfast here, the food is always great try the apple crisp pancakes and the huge omelets. The décor is granny's kitchen and the service is friendly and inviting.

By far, the best place for a traditional brunch. The pancakes and omelettes are a must-have but be prepared to take some home or split.

  • Kaity F.

The perfect little diner. Great for those slow days where coffee and a plate full of food is just what you want. My personal favorite are their chocolate chip pancakes with a side of hash browns... seriously... their hash browns are SO good!

Great place for breakfast near the campus.

Great breakfast! I was pleasantly surprised with how good this restaurant is. The mushroom omelette is to die for and the portions are really big. Even though it's a busy restaurant, the service was great. Will come back!

  • Surendar C.

Yummy. Can get busy but the wait isn't too bad. Order apple pancake when you get in before you order anything else.

    (5)
  • Laura B.

Classic, busy, and and it smells amazing. An omelet order will get you this 9-egg mountain stuffed with mushrooms, ham, or whatever your heart desires (and will end up regretting later, I'm sure). A large stack of pancakes is 6 monster cakes encompassing a whole plate. Coffees are constantly refilled and service is quick with a smile. If you live in the area, you'll likely see people you know at this local hot spot. I got the bacon pancakes. DUH.

Another great breakfast! French toast with bacon and tropical syrup. It was great. Whenever we are in South Bend we have breakfast here. Good food and wonderful, quick service.

Had the Apple Pancake and it was as good as I remembered it too be. Service was so so and what is up with the lack of refills on soda!

  • Wink B.

If I could eat here every morning, I would. -Omelettes are superb; fluffy and perfectly cooked. -Bacon and Sausage are good quality. -Crepes are actually crepes, and are delicious. -Swedish pancakes... can't beat them. The real attractions here are the German "Dutch Baby" style pancake, and the obscene looking Apple Pancake. Both are outstanding. Oh, and who can go wrong with pigs in a blanket? The quality at this place is very consistent, so if you don't like to spend 30-45 minutes of your Sunday morning standing in line surrounded by dour churchgoers, come on a weekday.

  • Anonymous J.

Best cheap breakfast in town. We split an omelet, which is more than enough for two. If we're really treating ourselves, we'll get an apple pancake. Staff is awesome. Weekend breakfast lines get long, but they move fast--it's worth the short wait.

  • Taylor C.

The pancakes are amazing! Best I've ever had. Will return again very soon.

This place was a perfect stress reliever while I was an abused grad student at ND. Great pancakes and coffee, awesome wait staff, and a really cute atmosphere. In the summer, always get the fresh strawberry crepes and, when she's working, always get Lucy as your waitress :)

Simply outstanding breakfast food. My bridal party and parents went the morning of the wedding to fill up on some quality breakfast. The amount of food you get is incredible - I ordered scrambled eggs and bacon and also got toast and hashbrowns. My dad and matron of honor ordered omelettes and I think my dad licked his plate clean. I'm not sure what our other table ordered, but I know they enjoyed their meal and their waitress was "sassy." A huge hit with the group. And, the coffee was hot and strong.

  • Dmytro A.

Only ate here once, and even though there was a wait (game weekend) it remains one of my most memorable breakfasts ever eaten. THAT delicious.

    (4)
  • Matt W.

The bathroom is really small. If you have to go maybe you should hold it until you get home. If you can't hold it well then it serves you right for drinking all that coffee.

    (5)
  • Javier M.

Friendly service and big portions for small prices. They can get busy so if you're starving to eat right away probably not the best idea for Sunday brunch. Food was delicious, definitely hit the spot. Bathroom is small and needs to be remodeled.

  • Dean S.

My favorite breakfast place. The apple pancake is fabulous (sweet and delicious). The orange juice is fresh-squeezed and fantastic, and the coffee is always full. The wait staff are friendly and efficient. Saturdays are usually quite busy, but you typically get through the line reasonably quickly and Biscuits and Gravy only available on Saturdays -- just be careful to ask for the hash browns on the side, by default they put the hash browns under the B&G.

  • Joleen K.

One of my two favorite breakfast places. They have the best coffee around.

Here is the update so far. The OWNER/manager woman has a horrible attitude. She was bragging how she banned some customers from dining in her restaurant over this last week. C'mon, people take notice of these things. Maybe it's time to think retirement because people that choose to eat at your place are #1 right? How to fix your stress issues...hire a hostess. Making your waitresses and busser seat the restaurant is poor management. Keep the bitching off the service floor (starts with management and works it's way down). Make me feel welcome when I sit at YOUR table. Now as far as the food. I have no complaints. It's really is very consistent. Coffee is good, eggs cooked perfectly but nothing super special. They provide a video screen in the entrance advertising local partner businesses. Great idea, just make sure your service is up to Par. Be aware not to have high expectations

Ditch the diet for a day and eat some amazing breakfast here. I had the pancake stuffed pancakes and they were heavenly. Everything looks and smells so good.

Really good. I was a regular at Original Pancake House in AZ and went knowing what to expect from the food. The Dutch Baby is delicious but seemed a little small compared to the ones I always ate in AZ. Service here was perfect. Not bothersome, not neglectful. Just right. We were seated quickly for as busy as the restaurant seemed.

One of my favorite local breakfast spots. Nothing fancy but they are known for their German pancake as well as their Apple pancake which are very eye appealing as well as delicious. Love the "Belgian waffle" various omeletes you really can't go wrong. I'm a bacon aficionado and they have a top ten bacon in my opinion. The must are the hash browns !! Perfectly crisp outside with a tender creamy inside. Wish I could replicate at home. The hash browns are worth the lines on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Great staff super busy good food. South bend staple.

  • Alan T.

Thoroughly adequate, but not impressive. I may be disillusioned because there is a chain of original pancake houses in Michigan that are considerably better than this one. I wouldn't say that there was anything wrong with my pancakes and eggs, but on another trip to South Bend I'll probably try someplace else.

    (2)
  • Justine E.

Their mushroom omelette may have been the best omelette I have ever eaten! The hash browns were crispy and delicious too. The service was fast and friendly and customers were in and out without a wait. Great place!!!

Well that was awesome! Our meals were huge. My husband had sausage and eggs and added a side of bacon. I had bacon and eggs. The coffee was good. Better than most breakfast joints and I know this because my husband said he liked it and he usually hates restaurant coffee. Did I mention there was a lot of food? The meals came with 2 eggs, 4 slices of bacon (super thick) or sausage, a heap of hash browns (my fave breakfast item after waffles) on their own plate, and three pancakes. Oh the pancakes! I'm not a pancake person, but I figured since they came with the meal I'd give them a try. Perfect! Perfect texture, taste and held together well when we made impromptu griddles with them. We will definitely be back! Oh and be forewarned this place closes at 2pm everyday. Watch out for sleepy weekend mornings.

I have been coming here to eat for at least 45 years, as the first time I remember this place was when I was in kintergarden. My first meal here ever was pigs in a blanket. Now, thankfully, my tastes have changed and my choice more often than not is the mushroom omelet. Mmmm good. The decor is fun, kinda a rustic, farmy feel, the only thing that I could suggest to make it even better would be to serve mamosas on Sundays, lol, or get that antique scale fixed. One of my few 5 star deserving eateries. This place is great , and it is not in downtown South Bend, so it is safe!

The Original Pancake House easily serves the best breakfast I have ever eaten. The bacon comes in thick, perfectly cooked slices. The pancakes are divine. And there is so much of everything! Love it. Love it so much.

Great little place. We ordered a vegetable omelette and it came with hashbrowns and a short stack of three pancakes. Reading on the menu that it was a four egg omelette, we decided to split the meal. That was a very wise choice, because we're no longer college-age and cannot handle the massive amount of food that was given to us. The omelet was delicious. Ingredients were fresh, and it was prepared very well. The pancakes were light and fluffy and delicious too. This was a very wise detour from IHOP.

I know, I know, this is an otherwise unremarkable Midwestern breakfast diner with "American Picker" farmhouse decor (though I DO have a soft spot for Clabber Girl tins from the 1930's). Why four stars? The German pancake. For some reason I can never find this type of thing when I'm actually in Europe. I think people don't go out for breakfast there and this is the type of thing that they make at home on holidays. Hence it is so amazing. This is a monster pancake that is more like a bowl cake--it is shaped like a huge bowl with crispy edges. Despite being so massive, it was really fluffy and light. And despite being that guy who puts maple syrup on chocolate chip pancakes, this pancake was absolutely perfect with just powdered sugar and lemon (sugar and lemon is also how they eat pancakes in the UK on Shrove Tuesday--but alas I've never had those there). Anyway, this was a really top notch treat. I would easily go back here just for this pancake--and maybe to try the Swedish lingonberry pancake. If I went to Notre Dame, I'd be here all week before finals.

Read enough positive reviews about this place to make me try it for breakfast. It's standard diner fare with an okay omelette and a decent apple pancake. IMHO Neither deserved the amount of praise it received on here. Maybe my expectations were too high. That could be. My hubby says they are where food is concerned. Yelp brought me in. Not likely to return.

It is easy to give the Pancake House 5 stars. I grew up going to this restaurant for breakfast. Nothing had changed and I will always love going here when I'm in South Bend. It is nothing fancy but it is a classic breakfast cafe. There menu offers traditional breakfast items. Great service and fantastic food!! My only suggestion- get there early. This pancake house will always have a crowd. This is a popular place on Notre Dame football weekends. If you get there early you can enjoy an awesome breakfast and avoid a crowd!

  • Erik M.

I have been here twice and both times thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The food is good and well priced, especially the apple pancake which is well worth the wait. Service isn't all that great but for the price who really cares? Overall, it is a great place and strongly recommend it.

  • Christina F.

My husband and I decided we wanted to go on a breakfast date so we chose to go somewhere new. This place is appalling!! The omelette a came out looking like an undesirable lump of egg mixture with fake cheese and the hash browns were like a rock!! The large orange juice is really small for the price and the coffee atrocious...really this is ridiculous!! Do not eat here!! The crepes are the only thing worth the visit, if you find yourself here! (But watch the cherry pits!!) Picture of nasty egg lump posted!!

We found this place on Yelp while on a trip and we are so glad we did!! The food was fantastic with service to match! They have the best coffee I have ever tasted.

Wow!! Super yummy breakfast!! I got the pecan pancakes... Six pancakes!! I should've spilt it with someone considering I could only finish 2 of the 6!! We'll definitely be coming here!!

Came for breakfast, ordered baked spinach omelet and added chorizo. Came with hash browns and upgraded to bacon pancakes. Very good! No grease and not oily! Hash browns crispy with no oil, don't know how they do it. Bacon pancakes are good too. Huge portions with low prices!

Came here since we love the OHoP in Nj. Wasn't quite the same food wise but the service was good. Pancakes were a little dry. Coffee was on point. Omelettes smaller than NJ. Overall still good for Sunday breakfast

The Sunday-morning breakfast options in South Bend--in all of Michiana, really--feel unlimited sometimes. Just when I thought I had tried every place that has been around since Nick Konmolopolous moved to the US from Greece in 1948 and opened up a little restaurant, there are five more places that have been around since forever that people are telling me about. All of this is to say that places like The Original Pancake House get lost in the shuffle. Is it good? Yes. Does it stand out? Sadly, not really. The service is all right. Look, I worked in a restaurant on Sunday mornings and afternoons, when the after-church crowd would roll in in their Sunday finest and making demands left and right, so I get it; I really do. There isn't always time for pleasantries and heartfelt how-are-yas and the hugging of people you know and like a lot, if not love. But if you're busy, be busy. Treat everyone the same (that is, well). Heck, treat everyone like you're in a hurry. But don't, under any circumstances, make some people feel welcome and others feel like you're giving those first people special treatment. I expect to wait on a Sunday morning. But the food isn't worth this particular wait.

  • Anjelica N.

Somehow I managed this miss this place during my college career. For shame! Affordable prices, big portions...this is a great place for Sunday breakfast. The fresh pulp orange juice is delicious and hot coffee is constantly being refilled before you're even half empty! I got to this place during primetime also known as brunch-time Sunday on a home football game weekend. Other than the wait for the table, I would say the service here is fantastic. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Quick with our order and relatively quick with our food. The Old Country Style Eggs Benedict was my choice and at $8.75 it was well worth the money. Open-faced biscuits, sausage patties, scrambled eggs and country style gravy smothered. Artery clogging? Perhaps. Delicious? Most definitely.
